‘Lineage’

2021

Inspired by a traditional Maori pattern, ‘Niho Taniwha’ or ‘The Teeth of the Taniwha’.

In Māori mythology taniwha are beings that live in deep pools in rivers, dark caves, or in

the sea, especially in places with dangerous currents or deceptive breakers (rouge waves).

They are considered highly respected kaitiaki (protective guardians) of people and places.

This pattern can represent many things, primarily lineage, but also strength, resilience

and protection for those who wear it either woven into garments or as Ta Moko (tattoo).

Cherry, acrylic paint.

400mm dia x 100mm deep
