‘Broad Reach’

2016

During the 1970’s I lived for the thrill of racing Javelin class centreboard yachts on Wellington harbour.

I still recall the epoxy smell as we glued up another bulkhead sprung by a battering from a 25-knot Southerly.

The fastest most exciting leg of the race was the broad reach, angling across the wind with full kite (spinnaker) up, riding the waves like a surfboard. Rigging singing, rudder vibrating, a fine line between control and chaos!

Cherry, Juniper, Milk paint, waxed linen thread.

94cm wide x 350mm high x 90mm deep
